Scene anchor

It's Monday morning. You walk into the gemeente for the appointment you booked last week. The clerk is meneer de Vries. He needs your name and your address.

Teaching - naam, mijn

First, the word for name. Listen, then repeat.

Naam.
Naam.

How do you say, my? Listen and repeat.

Mijn.
Mijn.

Now put it together. My name.

Mijn naam.

And the connector, is. The same as in English, just spelled differently. Try, my name is.

Mijn naam is.

Now say, my name is Michael.

Mijn naam is Michael.

Clerk's question - wat is uw naam

Now the clerk's side. He'll ask, what is your name? The word, what.

Wat?
Wat?

Your, formal version. Listen and repeat.

Uw.
Uw.

Note this is the polite, formal your. You use it with officials, doctors, anyone you'd treat as Sir or Madam. We'll learn the informal version later.

So, your name is uw naam. How do you say, what is your name?

Wat is uw naam?

Now the meneer asks you. Listen.

Wat is uw naam?
Mijn naam is Michael.

Teaching - adres, hoofdstraat

Now your address. The word, address.

Adres.
Adres.

How do you say, my address?

Mijn adres.

Address number ten on a street called Main Street. Hoofd means main. Straat is street. Together, Hoofdstraat. Listen.

Hoofdstraat.
Hoofdstraat.

Say, Hoofdstraat tien. Main Street ten.

Hoofdstraat tien.

Clerk's question - uw adres

The clerk asks, and what is your address? How does he ask that?

En wat is uw adres?

And you answer, Hoofdstraat tien.

Hoofdstraat tien.

Both-sides mid-dialogue drill

Drill both sides. The meneer asks for your name.

Wat is uw naam?

You answer.

Mijn naam is Michael.

He asks for your address.

En wat is uw adres?

You answer.

Hoofdstraat tien.

Teaching - tot ziens

The clerk says goodbye. Until we see each other again. The phrase, tot ziens.

Tot ziens.
Tot ziens.

How would you say goodbye back to him?

Tot ziens.

Note. Tot ziens is more formal than tot maandag from episode one. Tot ziens you can use with anyone. Tot maandag is specifically until Monday.

Second replay

Listen to the conversation again. You should follow all of it now.

Goedemorgen. Wat is uw naam?
Mijn naam is Michael.
En wat is uw adres?
Hoofdstraat tien.
Dank u wel. Tot ziens.
Tot ziens.

Full role-play

He asks for your address.
