Intro: the verb komen

Welcome to Dutch verbs, episode 9: komen, which means to come. In Dutch it is spelled:

k. o. m. e. n.Komen is the everyday verb for to come, to arrive.

Pairs naturally with gaan - the two directional verbs.

Present tense

Present tense. Listen and repeat.

Ik kom.I come.
Jij komt.You come.
Hij komt.He comes.
Wij komen.We come.
Jullie komen.You all come.
Zij komen.They come.

One more time, straight through.

Ik kom. Jij komt. Hij komt. Wij komen. Jullie komen. Zij komen.Past tense: kwam for singular, kwamen for plural.

Past tense

Ik kwam. Jij kwam. Hij kwam.I came, you came, he came.
Wij kwamen. Jullie kwamen. Zij kwamen.We came, you all came, they came.

Future tense

Future with zullen plus komen.

Ik zal komen. Jij zult komen. Hij zal komen.

In speech, usually replaced with gaan komen or just the present tense plus a time word.

Example sentences

He quit his job out of anger - he cut off his nose to spite his face.
