Well, hello everybody. This is a special edition of RE Weekly. We've got one of our, probably three times now, right? If you've been on once or three times, multi-guess. Three times, five times. And I just happened to be walking around here at South by Southwest and I found the Java FX lounge. So why don't you introduce yourself? So I'm Josh Maronacci. I'm an engineer for Java FX and Sun. And I'm a last minute addition to South by Southwest. It's my first time ever. And it's pretty crazy. Since it's your first time, what do you think of it? What's your feel for what's going on here? First thing I have to say is everybody's been very friendly, even the cab drivers. They're joking around. It's really cool. Very good beer. I'm very happy about that. And it's real, it's a real, just casual hangout atmosphere. Right, right. So this is our booth, but we call it the lounge because it's really just a bunch of chairs and we've got lights and music playing. Just hanging out. And you've got little buttons and everything, right? And we do have little buttons all over the place, so come by the booth with the buttons. So, people coming up, what are they interested in talking with you guys about? You know, it's a total mixture. I've got a couple of art students from UT. I've got people who are creating startups. I've got people who do video for large websites you've heard of. It's all over the map. It seems to be kind of a melting pot. And are they just sort of feeling their way around JavaFX or like how, what kind of conversations do you end up having? Most people just haven't heard of JavaFX. So we explain what it is, how it's built on the existing Java platform, adds all these new features. They really like the drag it out the browser part. They love that there's one SDK for that for desktop web and mobile. Right. And the production speed. I have a little demo where I draw something, drop effects, change it, flip it again, and all that's easy to see. Right. And so, has anyone given you any, like, crazy ideas? Like, I totally know what I could do with that. Yeah. So, I've been working on this little drawing tool. It's like, you know, this is

not Illustrator. This is, you drag some shapes out and you just kind of place them around. Right. And the guy's like, I'm making a website where people will be able to order custom snowboards. So, he wants a thing where they can... Custom snow globes? Oh, right. So, it'll be a picture of a snowboard and then all these little symbols and text you can type in. You drag the symbols out, resize them, position up, and it shows you, you know, the outline so you see what will be on the snowboard and what will be cut off. Then you hit a button, it'll go to his site, and you pay your 100 bucks or whatever it costs. Oh, yeah. And he'll make a snowboard and send it to you. Huh. That's interesting. I mean, I remember when there was first internet retail, there was a lot of, there was a lot of hope for, like, customized sort of things that you would build on the web, and except for a few little things that I can't remember, it didn't really happen on a very large scale. So, that's interesting. I think the time is now. The cost of custom production is low enough. Right. So, the tools are there so people can really do customizing beyond just putting, you know, text on them. So, have you had a chance to check out the rest of the conference? I have not yet, unfortunately. You just know the Loungeri really well. I know the Loungeri really well. We got some new furniture that finally came in last night to make a little popier, got our new lights there. I'm really hoping in Java 1, we can kind of have that atmosphere on a bigger scale. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you should have, like, a JavaFX unconference sort of thing, or JavaFX camp. That would be fun. Massive lounge. That's right. We'll build a fort. We'll build a fort. So, I forget the last time we talked exactly. It wasn't that fort. It was after Mobile War Congress. That's right. That's right. And so, I mean, has anything interesting been going on since then in JavaFX world? Not really announcement-wise. One thing we did announce here, and starting in a week, go to JavaFX.com/challenge. We have a coding competition. So, the top prize is $25,000, and it starts in a week and ends just before Java 1.

Right. I'm one of the judges, but I can be easily bribed without alcohol. So, it should be a lot of fun. Now, would you say that applies to the other judges, or are you unique in that position? Probably does not apply to the other judges. I can't say my vote would be skewed by the quality of your beer, but I wanted to see. Right, right, right. Well, that's good to hear. So, are you staying until Tuesday for this? Yeah, I'm here until Tuesday. I wanted to stay for more, but I have some things I have to do back home. So, the lounge is going to be here until then? I think the lounge is here as long as the pavilion is here. The convention is going on? Alright. Well, great. Well, thanks for taking a little bit of time to talk with us. Thanks. It's good talking to you.
