now that we've looked at the uh the the catalog stuff quite a bit i mean you guys you know being a management platform there's actually a lot of management options you know actually as as i always kind of tongue-in-cheek put it actually doing things that uh that you guys enable as well why don't we kind of check out the actually doing things oh so you want to see some action that's right uh as with convert uh you know basic virtualization to virtualization management is kind of in there uh you know basic vm ops you can start stop uh you know pause reboot kill take a snapshot right uh we also have some advanced features like migration and stuff like that which i'll go into it a bit later uh a node level you have operations like uh you know migrate all my vm's to some other machine right this will be a very typical scenario when you have a machine which where you have detected that a fan is not working or something like that uh and you want to you know move all the virtual machine to some other box and fix service that box and and and bring it up back the other important uh feature uh is that we allow you to create your virtual network environment um and basically what you do is you know create a uh uh test network and and and as as you're doing this i mean just just for people who who sort of who may not know or don't have a lot of experience like what why are people what if why would you create a virtual network like right so basically you're creating a virtual network so that uh you can have uh you know a network that is similar to physical network but you don't really need to go and change wiring and do all the stuff right uh what it allows you to do is you can have multiple vm's on this virtual network right and they can be either isolated completely isolated from the rest of the environment um so this allows you to you know do a bunch of testing um in relatively isolated

2:06

environment once it's uh configured it's very easy to kind of associate that with a vm right instead of this vm on that network i want to say hey instead of using the common uh zenbr network use use the test network that i just created when we're building up templates we're looking at some of the uh the storage options that the uh the templates can have let's move to uh like a server pool uh and there are a whole uh there are a couple of very interesting features uh at server pool level right so we allowed you to define uh a storage storage pool that is associated with uh with a server pool right right um let's take a quick example and go through uh defining an nfs storage uh this is my class c storage for storage yeah as jadeep is doing this uh you know this is a popular and a very um natural thing to do for environments where you have sans or even nazis um and you know typically a a pool of physical servers will have a an associated sand behind it and what convert allows you to do is declare that pool in a in a server pool and then just declare the sand and automatically anything as jadeep will show you do inside that server pool will have that sand and the lans associated with it as an option for for storage and it'll just be single click and you'll say use the sand and that and it'll go that way all right so we just defined uh uh nfs storage uh and at the time of provisioning we can say a provision on your vm uh and instead of for this coming from there uh you will will pick it up from the newly class c storage uh over there one of the other things i was interested in seeing is you know when you're trying to figure out where to place a new uh a new virtual server that you've

4:07

created i mean how do you sort of or how do you how do you figure out where to place it among the pools and the the physical servers that you have you you keep a long logbook of all the measurements uh all the vms that you've placed stick it on your wall uh and then pick the next one you have you have one of those books with this small grid paper in it right it's like the engineer's notebook it's a it's a pdf available for download along with convo that's right so uh no i think this is a uh this is a very common uh request and uh we do have a feature you know that uh we call initial placement or intelligent placement um and what that allows you to do is do a provisioning operation uh essentially at a server pool level right so you don't select which server etc etc you just select a server pool uh and convert figures out an appropriate machine uh for this provisioning op uh so in this case as you can see right uh it has picked up server 2 as a candidate choice right so you don't have to worry you can keep on uh provisioning at the server pool and convert will distribute the load evenly uh for you another uh interesting feature at uh server pool is uh provisioning settings or settings at the pool level uh and what this allows you to do is you know standardize your practices uh so in this case what you're looking at is you know whenever you're provisioning stuff in this particular server pool uh provisionate uh in this particular storage right right right so these are sort of filling in the the variables for the templates if you will at the pool level right right this this allows you to uh you know standardize your practices uh uh for across the pool looking at the these pool settings i mean what exactly are the the the settings that we're looking at here so for example what you're looking here is uh uh the vm disk dir being specified to a particular location

6:08

and what this is signifying is uh any vm that get provisioned in this particular server pool uh it's disk etc would be creating at that particular in that particular storage right uh so this this allows for a complete standardization of your processes uh in your in your own environment i see there's like an add and remove option down there what are the like what are the other options that you can configure at this pool level so uh we have few the vm disk the network the bridge that you want to use and stuff like that right but this is freeform actually you can create your own settings and use them in your images right so you can say hey here is i want to specify my uh class c storage for this pool is in mnt qa share or something like that right and then just use this particular setting in your uh in your images where you want to kind of move we were looking at like when at the the pool level how you can set and create your own variables actually for for the specific instances that you have running in that pool and then of course on the physical servers on there and i i wonder like you know in addition to creating your own variables like how far can people go as far as like actually getting their hands dirty you can actually go pretty deep uh let me show you a couple of very interesting things uh so what we are looking here is a script that we uh that kind of controls the provisioning uh logic right so all the variables the settings the template variables the disk creation uh and processing is all kind of encoded here and this is a script that that convert is generated or where does the script come from this is this is a script that comes with convert okay uh but you can you customize it to your need right so a good example is hey i'm used to using zen tools for my ubuntu

8:11

installation uh you know you can spend some time with the script and come up with uh something that will you know kick off zen tools uh which is and and i just convert to your uh deployment process deployment and and this is i mean the actual i'm assuming the actual script that convert is going to run when it starts provisioning these servers absolutely absolutely when i'm done with provisioning uh you know just send me an email or create a ticket somewhere or log it somewhere that a vm was provisioned uh etc as you saw right we have you know ability to create your own settings or variables uh have the script and the whole processing logic is kind of under your control uh so and once you kind of do that the rest of the tool kind of works in a similar fashion right the provisioning the vmops uh the initial placement or intelligent placement migration and all that stuff kind of works after that so uh i have a bunch of vms uh running my and i just brought up brought them up to kind of see how kind of they look like so we got uh windows flavor you can you know virtualize the desktop uh we got uh oops we got uh the uh red hat server or linux uh vms uh and the appliances that we talked about right so here is the sugar crm appliance uh that i'm using uh which is kind of uh the departmental crm vm that you're seeing here right right um so we also have you know some little bit of integration with uh the appliance management ui where you can go and manage a bunch of stuff for and configure the appliance itself let's take a example that you know somebody's using this sugar crm appliance or application um and suddenly the administrator decides that he needs this to be moved onto a different server right right um so there comes our favorite migration feature but you can

10:17

simply click select the uh virtual machine select it and drop it on the on the server that you want to move it to right and initiate the migration now while this migration or live migration is going on you're free to use the application in the exact same way as you are using uh the end users of your applications are not affected while we're you know just chatting uh as you might have noticed we just got our uh crm virtual machine moved from server one to server two you know the migration feature itself you know opens up a lot of door where you can do maintenance do optimization move things around uh to get better performance uh you know move stuff down to small number of servers uh and save energy shut down the machines that are not being used right and a whole bunch of features you can get some of that mythical elasticity from cloud computing if you need to uh to like take care of like a higher number of requests at some point you could move it to a beefier server absolutely one thing that i would add here is that this this demo piece that uh jadeep showed live migration um it is it is one of those features which uh if you which really go a long way in highlighting some of the advantages that building out an open source stack gives um you know even a fortune 500 data center which is if you go out to the commercial domain you will find that there's a very heavy price and cost premium placed on live migration and elasticity of the environments you will actually go out and you will spend a pretty penny to be able to do this in your environment and if you alternatively if you come here you've just seen this is just part of the base product um you can you can ostensibly get this elasticity and and live migration or v motion or whatever you wish to call it uh building out a purely open source stack um and it's all built in so i you know we like to to highlight this as one

12:17

of the key differentiators and key advantages of actually going in and and realizing that with the open source stack you don't give up on anything you do not it's not as if it's virtualization light it's actually virtualization plus plus if you're coming from a commercial uh background as we told people at the beginning it's open source so obviously there's some easy way to download it and get up and running with it but like what's the scenario for just like getting up and running with convert so you go to converter.com uh and follow the download link um and then it'll take you to the download and the instructions where you can uh set up your convert and most of most of the time it you know it it works in the you know 10 minutes so you should be able to see some of these fancy features up and running in within 10 minutes we are not just an open source project in name only we we actively and aggressively would like to recruit the community to to come in and assist with the project both as jadeep said in terms of feedback in terms of large and small feature contribution um if if you want to to do documentation anything nothing's too small um we seek direction from the community and we also um like to encourage um very very aggressively and very um uh uh actively uh community involvement in any way shape or form so we can't say this enough we say this in our forums we say this on our uh um wiki we say this on our blog and we will continue to actively uh request the community come and join us in this project so so combature itself is a commercial company and and my assumption is that uh since you guys aren't a non-profit you sort of have some some uh some things that you're looking to collect some revenue around what are the things that that people could get as a service or or whatever else from combature the company yeah that's a great question and yes indeed i mean we while we are fully open

14:17

source indeed we do need to to pay the bills so um we have a comprehensive set of options uh for people who are looking for support and services um we the certified configuration on screen you see are the configurations that we will directly commercially support um if we were to click on the support and services page um on our website uh you will you will see that we offer actually three different types of packages um our most comprehensive is what we uh call the silver support package which um essentially you can see it on a table here gives you a comprehensive support package where you can uh have support incident incident based supports you can have identification and a bunch of other very cool stuff that you can see on the site um these are yearly support options another thing that we offer is if if you're not ready to commit to a yearly support contract and a lot of people are more comfortable on with a pay-as-you-go model we have that available too um no holds barred you can buy supported incidents a la carte um and go with that and you'll find more information about that here too and finally we offer a very different type of service which is our professional services organization um you know the people involved with the project and in the company have a lot of experience with virtualization deployments and what we offer is um if you're planning or if you've already rolled out or if you've rolled out and run into trouble um any irrespective of which phase of your rollout you are um we can offer professional services that can come and help you plan deploy and manage those environments so we see a lot of people come to us and say look this sounds all great um we don't have the expertise or we don't have the time or we don't have the resources to make it happen can you help and we say yes we can help you with planning we can help you with with procurement we can help you with uh with deployment you name it we'll hear it so that's a comprehensive set of stuff that we offer our customers and the last offering

16:18

is sort of a virtualization architect if you will to help you uh figure out whether it's setting it up or just maintaining it or whatever you need to to optimize your virtualization setup that's very well said yes that's very well said and and we find that and we're finding that a considerable number of people who are interested uh you know who can feel the compelling uh value proposition of virtualization sometimes feel that they they just don't have the the in-house uh shall we say expertise or or or just the resources and and you know just planning and architecting is virtualization is a is a slippery uh subject when you actually come down to the nuts and bolts of it and that's where we hope we can come in and add some value and and and help you guys get there
